gwcforwebThe TENTH Annual San Diego Regional School Garden and Nutrition Conference, “Gardening with Class”, will take place on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The conference is geared toward teachers and administrators who have or would like to start a school garden program. Workshops will cover a wide variety of topics, all with strong connections to educational teaching standards.  Teachers will also have the option to tour a nearby school garden as one of their workshop options. A vermicomposting workshop will be presented by Master Composter Jerry Louis and the Solana Center will be available during the conference to answer any composting questions.

The International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) Committee of the US Composting Council invites YOU to get involved in the 2nd Annual ICAW Poster Contest — Everyone is invited to participate: municipal, facility, and state agency representatives, students (grade school, middle school, college), homeowners, commercial composters, green industry businesses, youth groups! The 2009 theme is “Compost!…Recycling The Way Nature Meant It To Be”.

The poster contest challenges ALL OF US to express our belief in the composting industry and benefits of using compost. The winning poster will be used to promote the 14th Annual International Compost Awareness Week, May 3-9, 2009.173

The contest begins on December 5, 2008 and continues until January 30, 2009.

Children will learn Super Hero skills to help save the planet at Green Skills for Life this Saturday. The Solana Center will host a Vermicomposting Booth where children can create worm bins with the assistance of a Master Composter! There will also be additional hands-on composting activities for children and Master Composters will be available to answer all of your composting questions. Composting to the rescue!

Start composting lunchroom food scraps at your school with a large worm bin! The Solana Center offers a Lunchroom Vermicomposting Program that assists schools with the creation of a large worm bin to compost school-wide!

Program Highlights:

  • 45 minute vermicomposting presentation
  • Initial set up of large worm bin
  • Includes all materials (bin, worms, scale, signs)
  • Periodic monitoring and ongoing technical assistance from a Master Composter
  • Follow-up consultations and additional program assistance as needed

Start composting at your school! The Solana Center for Environmental Innovation offers Classroom Vermicomposting Presentations for schools in San Diego County. These presentations are fun and educational and include hands-on learning about:

  • Recycling and composting
  • Decomposition
  • Worm Anatomy
  • Ecosystems
  • Life cycles of plants and animals

Presentations are conducted by Master Composters and include a desktop worm bin complete with worms, Vermicomposting Guide for Teachers, and free technical/program assistance.

Presentations meet funding requirements for school garden grants. Additional funding is available for schools in Encinitas and San Diego funded by the City of Encinitas and the City of San Diego.
