Tetanus is a diseaseĀ of the central nervous system caused by bacteria that are present in soil and manure. Because this bacteria is so widespread, even a small open cut can put you at risk of contracting the disease. Vaccination provides protection against tetanus. According to the The Complete Compost Gardening Guide, “every gardener should have his or her tetanus shot up to date- tetanus boosters are recommended every 10 years for adults”. That goes for composting as well. If you get a cut or scrape while working with your compost pile it is suggested to double check your immunization record or call your doctor to get a shot.
